Amazing free attraction in Hexham, small fee to see the Roman Crypt but well worth paying, especially as a volunteer goes down with you and fully explains everyrhing and points out important things to note. The volunteers were very kind and friendly, answering all our questions and just seemed happy to be talking about something they care about. It was very calm and quiet inside, with lots of educational boards around and artefacts

Visited the Abbey museum, the Abbey and St. Wilfred's original saxon Chapel in the undercroft of the Abbey.
The small Chapel was built around the 8th century using demolished Roman stone from a bridge and a monument. (Access to the Saxon chapel costs £3)

A visit brought on by an interest in Anglo Saxon history and a desire to see the Crypt that is the remaining building from St Wilfreds original church. What a surprise not only to find that in super condition but an Abbey building full of history, architecture, board paintings, beautiful stained glass and an interesting interactive history trail. Staffed with helpful enthusiastic volunteers the only cost is a donation to the upkeep and three pound to enter the crypt with its unique Getta stone in the roof. Car parking in Hexham is limited but if you go past the Abbey and bear left there is a car park attached to the Abbey or you can buy a parking disk for a pound from local shops that gives you fee on street car parking for two hours. Well worth a visit.

Historic abbey with ancient artifacts, a free museum and a cafe.it has a large park to the rear. There are music shows held here at times providing fantastic acoustics. The crypt is an interesting and spooky experience. The shops and restraints are in the immediate area.
